Overseas Student Health Cover is health insurance that student visa (subclass 500) holders must hold for the full length of their visa. It covers doctor visits, some hospital treatment, ambulance in emergencies and limited prescription medicines. You show your OSHC card at the clinic; the provider either bills your insurer directly or you pay and claim back in the app.
One of the largest providers. Strong app, direct-billing network of clinics and 24/7 student health advice line. Typical singles cover sits around $500–$650 per year.
Widely accepted, with Bupa-owned medical centres offering direct billing so you often pay nothing at the counter. Similar pricing to Medibank.
Usually the cheapest of the big names for single cover, backed by Medibank's network. Good if your university lets you choose your own provider.
Competitive singles and couples pricing, quick online claims and a partnership network for direct billing at many GPs.
The default provider at several universities. Broad clinic network and multilingual support lines.
Australia has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Students from those countries can enrol in Medicare for medically necessary treatment, but most still need OSHC (or an exemption) to satisfy visa conditions.
Overseas Visitor Health Cover is the equivalent for working, graduate (485) and sponsored visa holders. It works the same way but typically includes broader hospital cover, and some visas set a minimum level of cover you must hold.
